Apple’s new Mac Studio pushes unified memory into territory previously associated with specialized servers. The M5 Ultra configuration scales to a 36-core CPU, an 80-core GPU, 512GB of unified memory, and 1.2TB/s of memory bandwidth.
The practical delta
The headline is not simply another faster desktop. Large open-weight models are often constrained by memory capacity before raw compute. A 512GB shared pool can keep models local that would otherwise require multiple discrete accelerators or a cloud instance.
Keep the benchmarks attributed
Apple claims up to 4.3 times the peak AI compute of M3 Ultra and says four systems can deliver up to three times the inference performance of one through Thunderbolt 5 and RDMA. Those figures depend on Apple’s test workloads and should be independently reproduced before purchase decisions.
